1.1 Background of the Study
Civic engagement is essential for the active participation of individuals in the democratic processes that shape their communities and nation. However, in many rural areas, including Bida Local Government Area in Niger State, there is a disconnect between citizens and governance. Low voter turnout, apathy towards public affairs, and limited access to information contribute to this disengagement. Photography, as a visual medium, can play a critical role in bridging this gap by raising awareness about civic responsibilities, the importance of participating in democratic processes, and highlighting the roles citizens can play in their local communities. Photographs capturing local political events, community outreach programs, and public meetings can serve as powerful tools for motivating individuals to become more involved in civic activities. This study seeks to explore how photography can be utilized to promote civic engagement in Bida, examining its role in encouraging active participation and fostering a deeper connection between the community and its governance.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the importance of civic engagement for the development of communities in Bida, the area has witnessed low levels of participation in democratic processes. Several factors, including lack of awareness, limited political education, and mistrust of government, have contributed to this apathy. Photography, as an accessible and engaging medium, has the potential to increase visibility around civic matters and inspire action, yet it remains underutilized in this context. This study aims to investigate the role of photography in fostering civic engagement in Bida and assess whether visual storytelling can enhance public participation and awareness.
